When he was young his thirst for knowledge always had him operating leagues above his grade level, and while he managed to cultivate not only his academic knowledge, he also became smarter on a more street level. If he were ever to join an organised crime syndicate, his position would absolutely be mastermind. Knowing how things operate makes it easier to predict what action something- whether it be human or not- will take next. This prediction gift is also what managed to burn him out so quickly, but it is a positive trait nonetheless! - obsessive Daseul's lack of interest in literally everything else leaves him entirely too much time to dedicate to other things, and that brings us to his almost obsessive way of operating. Throughout his life Daseul has done things only to please his parents- kept his grades pristine, played the violin long after he'd lost interest in it, attended night classes as many nights a week as he could fit, and let his sister play around with him like a glorified mannequin until she got too old to be thrilled by her brother in frilly dresses. After Minseo's accident this trait only amplified, and the cute boy eager to please his family also became the boy who would follow Minseo home from work, break into her apartment to leave her ready meals, and chase away strangers who would otherwise want to know her. + dedicated While not explored in his home setting, his nearly obsessive loyalty is something that often comes into play when meeting new people who he has a connection with, and will absolutely come up while he's in game. - manipulative It may seem like Daseul only has the best of intentions, but what Daseul has are the best intentions for himself. He is an incredibly manipulative and selfish little boy, and doesn't take kindly when things don't go his way. When making a decision, the one he chooses is always correct, and any deviation from his decision is an incorrect choice, whether the person it affects thinks so or not. While Minseo was eager to move on with her life, meet some new people, maybe date a little, Daseul's need to keep her close by deleting her new contacts and fielding who interacted her was all him. - controlling This can also be seen blatantly in his response to finding out about his impending death scandal. Instead of heading back to his parents, the press, police, anyone, he decided that it would be best the shoulder the knowledge alone and flee to keep it to himself. He's prone to a lot of self-sacrifice when it comes to things he thinks are 'for the best', eg uprooting his life to avoid a scandal, or throwing all his free time into running errands for Minseo. - reckless Daseul's strange disregard for himself also frequently manifests in recklessness. Daseul does many, many reckless things without thought of how it might turn out or how it might impact him. During his highschool days of acting out, he would frequently seek out and seduce older, married men for the thrill of it, and has been known to stick his head straight into the mouth of danger, just for the experience. His entire relationship with Jaejung is built on his own reckless desires, and often leaves him bruised and beaten, limping home on his own. After one particularly violent altercation, he was left with a fractured cheek bone and a concussion from being thrown down onto a tiled floor, but still went straight back to Jaejung the next day, with bandage adhesive barely dried. Lastly, and likely Daseul's most evident negative trait: he is incredibly manipulative. 'For the greater good', or for what he thinks is correct, Daseul will lie, coerce, or force things to go according to his plans. Things will go his way, or he will make them go his way. While he does think he's a good boy who does things for the greater good, Daseul has a very morally ambiguous character, and will do as he pleases regardless of the consequences. + upfront While Daseul spends a lot of time being purposefully obtuse, he is incredibly upfront when it comes to things he feels and things he wants. He is a blunt and straightforward boy who will say exactly what he wants and expects without mincing his words or softening his expressions. HISTORY Daseul has always been a gifted boy. Bright as a bulb when he was growing up, the thrill of gaining knowledge fuelled him into becoming a very academically driven young boy. His parents happily enrolled him into accelerated programs and presented him with multitudes of tutors to keep him in a league above the rest of his classmates and peers. However the busier his schedule got and the more demanding his classes were, the less enjoyment he got from it, until eventually there was no joy left in any subject he studied, and going through the motions of learning, recalling, and regurgitating into other forms became a monotonous task. Bit by bit, all the things he used to enjoy became more and more empty to him until he woke up one morning feeling like a robot whose purpose was to do nothing more than repeat information. Essays he was tasked to write were nothing more than repeated information corrugated into a slightly different form, new songs for the violin were only old chords rearranged in a slightly different way. Nothing was new anymore, and nothing was fun. After this point, Daseul stopped making friends, stopped participating in hobbies, and stopped spending any time honing any other skills for enjoyment or fun. He started to feel like there was nothing worth living for anymore, and only went through the motions of day to day life with no real interest of his own. With his sole focus on going through the motions of school, quickly he rose to become top ranked in his class, and started to gain popularity with his classmates. With the monotony of every day life, he stated to desire failure just for a taste of something new, but all the avenues he took only lead him to more success. There was no challenge left with each hurdle he was tasked to overcome feeling like nothing more than a small step. There was nothing fulfilling left in anything he was given to do. Until a boy named Jaejung noticed his lack of ambition and started to relentlessly bully him for it. Frustrated with his inability to grasp the #1 spot in their class, he took it out on Daseul who could get it with ease despite not even wanting it. What started with intimidation quickly grew into physical assault with Daseul's total lack of reaction or retaliation, and Daseul loved every second of it. It was a break from the norm and the monotony of constantly taking in and regurgitating the same information over and over, and something he couldn't control and couldn't win; something that was always new and different. The introduction of Jaejung into Daseul's schedule broke the monotony that was driving him so crazy, and he loved the stark difference it brought to his dull, grey life. During this time of Jaejung slowly starting to chip away at Daseul's disinterest, Daseul's sister Minseo, elder sister by 8 years, had managed to uncover an organ trafficking ring through her work in the legal sector. As a warning for her poking her nose too far into things she shouldn't, the ring kidnapped, tortured, and beat her. During this time, Daseul went ballistic at the police department for not finding her fast enough, her coworkers for letting her get into trouble, and her boss for allowing her to research such a dangerous case. Being higher profile than some of the other kidnapped individuals, Minseo's disappearance allowed the police department to gather up enough evidence to put a substantial amount of the gang running the ring behind bars. Minseo was rescued and hospitalised. After this point, Daseul developed an unhealthy obsession with protecting her, and spent night after night sleeping on the hospital floor to make sure that nobody else was able to get in without him knowing. After her discharge, he began to stop by her apartment every day after school to make sure it was secure, and she had healthy food to eat. Things began to normalise, Daseul's obsession lessened, and he threw himself at Jaejung to squeeze some thrill into his life. What he didn't expect was to be forcefully thrust into his own drastic change. After fooling around in his school's computer lab one evening, he overheard a meeting of important figures discussing an insurance scam they were planning- one that directly involved him. The plan was to kill him and some of the other high profile students at the school in an electrical fire, collect the damage and death insurance payout, and prompt Daseul's father into retaliating legally using their own affiliated lawyers for the lack of due care. Hearing this and panicking, Daseul fled the city and made his way to the harbour where he stowed away on a ship exporting goods to China. He spent a day in the cargo hold before he was caught and brought aboard the ship to meet the captain. He lied about his name, where he was from, and where he intended to go once they arrived at the destination (Tianjin, he found out). The captain seemed to warmly accept him, and allowed him to stay aboard the ship. However, once arriving, the captain met with a well dressed man, and using Chinese far out of Daseul's 'smart boy' capabilities, they exchanged a large amount of money, and Daseul was handed off to the well dressed man.
